Blazing Writer of the Month.

Our Blazing Writer for the month of June is 14- year-old Zimbabwean poetess Kimberley Magwaza. She is currently studying at Goldridge College, Kwekwe and lives in Harare with her parents and siblings. Let’s meet her.

Kim Magwaza

My name is Kim Magwaza and I love writing poetry. I started writing poems in Form 1 , in the 2018. I realized that, through poetry, I could express my emotions using different moods. My love for poetry continued to grow and I discovered that it wasn’t only about expressing my emotions, but it was also a way of communicating with the people around me.

My poems are mainly about the things that happen around us on a daily basis – things that we may not realise how much their impact may affect us. Hence, my poems are a way of creating awareness for everyone around the globe. All my poems are inspired by different stories. Nevertheless, they all come under one theme: ME AGAINST THE WORLD. This theme shows how different situations around us can impact our lives.

On the 15th of July, I started my blog. I use this platform to publish my work and it has been of a great success so far. I wouldn’t really say that I have a specific inspiration, maybe the world and society are my inspiration because they always give me something to write about. (As crazy as that may sound😃.)

My family, friends and all the people around me have been my main support system. They have always urged me to continue writing and to inspire others as well. There are also people behind the scenes who have continued to support me throughout my journey. One quote that keeps me going every day is:

“I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me.”

A typical day in my life is waking up to a pen, pencil and sheets of paper compiled with different ideas and opinions. These are the basic tools I use to write my poetry. I sum my poetry up by joining numerous phrases, emotions, situations, and literary devices. Whenever I am silent, know that I am writing a poem. Poetry is a way that I explore my thoughts and views.

I am really proud of how far I have come. Although this journey has had its bumps, I am where I am today because of those bumps. I am proud of the young lady I have become because of poetry. Poetry has helped me grow and express my views about any situation. I hope to grow my poetry even more in the years to come. I want to inspire people by becoming a voice to the voiceless.

Kim’s poem about society

Being a young poet has had its ups and downs because writing a powerful poem requires a lot of work . That means, trying to balance school work and writing poetry. Despite these, I have been able to cope well and manage my time wisely, not forgetting to have a little bit of fun too (chuckles). As a young poet, it may be difficult to get the outreach you want and you may not have all the funds to invest in personal development. However, it is important to seek guidance from other poets. By so doing, I have been able to improve my poetry and produce
better content.

It is also important to share your poems on social media, magazines, blogs, etc. By doing so, you will be able to connect with other poets, publishers, and magazine editors who can help you grow. Finally, showcase your talent because nothing
will ever stop you if you are determined. It is okay to try something new, once in a while, because you never can tell where it will take you.

Always dream big because dreams do come true if you set your heart and mind to it!
